Art is like music—it transcends language.
On April 9th, a group of our students took part in an unconventional and highly creative class. Their teacher invited a professional comic book illustrator to lead a hands-on workshop, offering a glimpse into the artistic world of visual storytelling and graphic narration.
During the first half of the session, the illustrator shared his creative process, walking the students through how he brings stories to life on the page. He explained his use of storyboards—a sequence of sketches that outline the structure of a story or concept. These visual drafts serve as a blueprint for the final comic book panels, helping to shape the narrative before the detailed drawing begins. The students learned how artists use pacing, angles, and character movement to convey emotion and plot progression through visuals alone.
In the second half of the class, it was the students’ turn to take on the challenge. They were asked to draw a character in different poses, and then place that character into a short comic sequence using a storyboard format. The rule was simple: the quality of the drawings didn’t matter, as long as the story was understandable. Creativity, not perfection, was the focus.
The results were both fun and insightful. While artistic styles varied, every storyboard had a story to tell. Most importantly, this immersive and playful method of teaching vocabulary and concepts related to illustration truly resonated with our French language learners—proving once again that art can be a powerful bridge across linguistic boundaries.
